There is very little research concerning the Mountain Tapir's status, but it is considered by some to be endangered. There are only about ten in zoos (eleven with this baby) and are rare to see in the wild. Hopefully this won't be one species to go extinct!
I love tapirs, and besides the noise in this, I love the moment I captured
Now this is just the sweetest thing that ever was.
Regardless of the noise and such, I absolutely love this picture. It's just such a tender moment! And the momma seems so incredibly gentle. x3
Wow, only eleven in zoos? It's good to see they are at least breeding in captivity, though. That's always a good sign. :3
I always love seeing pictures of Tapirs. x3 I've only ever seen the huge Malayan Tapir up close in the Denver zoo (and he's always sleeping), so these are especially interesting to me. So fuzzy!

It's not recommended that the LA. breed them as they're not officially endangered, but they feel very strongly about mountain tapirs and allowed them to breed anyways :]
The Central American Tapir here is always sleeping The mountain tapirs sit and rest, but don't sleep so they're a little more interesting.

This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
